1834 Plain 4 $5 Classic Head Gold Half Eagle Coin XF EF Extremely Fine Details
Mint chief engraver William Kneass based the half eagles Classic Head design on John Reichs cent of 1808. Minted under the Act of June 28, 1834, the coins reduced size and weight encouraged circulation over melting or export, and they served American commerce until hording became extensive during the Civil War. Accordingly, many show considerable wear.
